Company: City of Charlotte – Charlotte Water
Position: Project Coordinator
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Albuquerque, New Mexico.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CHARLOTTE AREA?
TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?
I’m a proud Civil Engineering graduate from Gonzaga University; FYI its Gun-Zag-ah not gorgonzola which my coworkers call it. Originally from Albuquerque New Mexico, I’ve spent the last four years exploring Charlotte and making it my new home. I’m extremely passionate about water and water related issues and feel that is the area in which I can provide the most value to our community.
DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORIAL MOMENT?
I volunteered as a counselor for the Junior Stockholm Water competition last year and got to spend two days around some of the brightest kids from around the US. It was hard to believe that the participants in the competition were still in high school! Most kids their age are worried about how to fit in or other typical high school drama and here I am talking to teens that are literally coming up with solutions to serious problems we as a society face. The idea that these kids could very well change lives with their inventions just blew me away!
IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?
There are so many great opportunities to volunteer in Charlotte. I participate in mostly water based volunteer activities such as steam clean ups and awareness walks. My favorite volunteer activity was the time I spent at Quail Hollow Middle school teaching with Citizen Schools.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OR INTEREST?
I have an amazing fiancé with whom I love exploring the city. We usually walk / bike (thanks B-Cycle!) around the city visiting breweries and any festivals we can find. I’ve also become a huge fan of NASCAR so we try to make it to any of the races that are in town.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE THAT YOU STAND BY?
If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. – Fred DeVito.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS?
I really love working for the city at Charlotte Water and could definitely see myself moving up through the ranks as opportunities arise. I love the feeling of having a direct connection to both of my passions, water and my community.
CAN YOUR SHARE ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
I would love to live up to my namesake… Mechenbier (machen – make, bier- beer), and one day own my own brewery.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU USED YOUR PASSPORT?
I was able to travel to Cambodia with Watermark to help build water towers in remote villages.
WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NO ONE KNOWS?
When Heinz released their new dunkable ketchup packet I wrote their PR department to let them know how much I liked it. Apparently they were excited to receive my feedback because in their thank you letter they included enough coupons for several years worth of free ketchup!
WHO IS YOUR HERO?
My parents. My Dad is hard working and has spent his life building a well-respected company in Albuquerque from the ground up. Both of my parents have always been extremely giving to the community in both time and resources and that is where I learned my sense community engagement. They taught me that family comes first and perseverance pays off.

David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell.
WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?
WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT YOU SAW?
Kenny George Band at the Rock Hill Food Truck Friday.
