DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORIAL MOMENT?
For about 4-5 years now I’ve been a huge supporter of a local non-profit named RunningWorks. They cater to Charlotte’s homeless and refugee community. I actually collect gently used and new items for them weekly. But, my most memorable moment came in 2015. Where me and the organization organized a competition, where the winner wins an all expense paid trip to Chicago to run the Chicago marathon. The winner ended up being a Chicago native. I ran a gofundme campaign for him and raised nearly $4,000 for Troy. We even stayed with his sister and her family. Unknown to Troy, I actually reached out to the sister and setup a sort of reunion. So ALL 4 of his siblings and mother came to Chicago to see Troy. And none of the siblings and mother lived closer than 7 hours away. It was a magical weekend to say the least. The family even made me a personal farewell video. I keep it in my phone, for times when I need a little inspiration.
IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?
I help my community in many ways. Since I’m from Charlotte, it holds a special place in my heart. Which is why I only volunteer for non-profits that are governed on a local/smaller level. I’ve been a registered CMS volunteer since my daughter was 5, and began Kindergarten(2011). I’ve been a member of the PTA at both of the Elementary schools she attended. I’ve been a volunteer GIRLS ON THE RUN Coach for 4 seasons. And I also work very closely with Jay Seago, who is the organizer for all LET ME RUN programs in Mecklenburg county. Together, we fulfill volunteer needs as well as coaching needs for the school sites for the program. But, I think my greatest contribution would be my desire to speak life into others. In most impoverished communities, there is a dire need for “verbal positive reinforcement”. Not many parents or adults are telling the youth their options. They’re simply passing off knowledge/skills that worked for them. Instead of promoting/instilling a sense of responsibility for their fellow man. And the world itself. Instead, our youth are being filled with hate and greed. Everything that I do, is to instill in the masses a sense of hope for others. And an unrelenting faith, that will never give up on the right thing to do.
