TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?

I am married to my amazing wife Jacquelyn Kent and recently became a Dad to a beautiful girl named Cassidy Kent. I am born and raised in Charlotte. I am a proud Eagle Scout. I went to East Carolina University and earned my degree in Middle Grades Education. I was a middle school Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for 5 years. Around 8 years ago while I was teaching, my brother and I started “Bring Back the Buzz” the grassroots campaign to rebrand the Charlotte Bobcats back to the Hornets. Swarms and costumes and giveaways and history lessons – all went “viral” on a shoestring budget, catching the wave at the very birth of social media. We were in German magazines, sent pics of folks wearing hornets gear all over the world and eventually wound up with an interview in the New York Times on Super Bowl Sunday as well as one with ESPN.   Our movement captivated the city and honestly took over our lives, eventually resulting in the Bobcats rebranding to the Charlotte Hornets. Due to the success of the movement and the massive following we had created, I decided to leave teaching and give marketing a shot. I was a marketing consultant for a couple years until landing my job at The Unknown Brewing Company where I was hired on as the Marketing Lead. Within the first 6 months I was promoted and took over all aspects of our Marketing and currently I serve as the Marketing Director.

DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORIAL MOMENT?

At The Unknown Brewing Company I have really made it a focus of mine to be involved in the community and promote the Charlotte culture as much as possible. The most memorable moment for me was running the Brewers Charity Championship this past year. The Brewers Charity Championship was a competition that The Unknown Brewing Company spearheaded between 9 different breweries in the Charlotte region to see who could collectively raise the most money for the Charlotte Community. While The Unknown Brewing Company came in 2nd place, it ended with me planning an event at Unknown that involved Mayor Vi Lyles, me writing a speech for her, and her recognizing all the great work breweries are doing for the city of Charlotte.

IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?

Being born and raised in Charlotte I am extremely passionate about my city and take a lot of pride in it. When we first started “Bring Back the Buzz” 8 years ago, the entire movement was built out of our love for this city and the need to bring back something that rightfully belonged to here – the “Hornets” name. Since I have taken on the Marketing Director role at Unknown, I have done my best to create a space here where Charlotte culture can thrive.  I saw the Brewers Charity Championship as a step toward bringing this about, I also began our mural project in partnership with South End In this project, we are giving 3 local artists the opportunity to showcase “what Charlotte means to them” on 3 massive paintings in our parking lot (local artist Andy Rocco has already finished his). I’ve spearheaded a new tradition of sending the Carolina Panthers off when the team buses pass Unknown before each away game.  This grew beyond my best projections when we were able to get 400 people to show up for the final away game and make the cover of the Charlotte Observer. This past year, Unknown hosted ShareCLTs massive GivingTuesdayCLT kickoff, partnered with local Hip Hop musicians to create “Bars, Bands and Brews” (a series of concert events we did the past year to help shine a light on local hip hop artists in Charlotte. I was interviewed by Creative Loafing about helping “Cultivate Black Brew Culture through Hip-Hop), started the Charity Tap at Unknown where we partner with local charities and donate a dollar from every beer poured on the charity tap to their charity, partnered with Yelp this year to host an event at Unknown to help collect coats for the homeless during the really cold weeks of winter, and helped Unknown release 2 beers this past year called “Dedicated to the Beaver” and “Buzzed City” that are in honor of things uniquely Charlotte.  Recently I did an interview on Yelp’s new Charlotte Podcast and was asked about all the things Unknown is doing in the city of Charlotte, and I said “unfortunately sometimes Charlotte can get a bad rap when it comes to not having culture or tradition and I have made it a personal choice of mine to do everything within my power to show people that Charlotte does have these things – whether it is through Bring Back the Buzz or The Unknown Brewing Company, doing everything I can to help cultivate it.”

PLEASE LET US KNOW ANY AWARDS OR RECOGNITIONS YOU’VE RECEIVED IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

Last year “Bring Back the Buzz” received the award for Best Social Media Page in Charlotte that was voted for by the people of Charlotte and hosted on Fox Charlotte.

Aside from this, most of my awards have been through the coverage I have been able to achieve. Whether it was being recognized by Yelp, Creative Loafing, the success of the events we host or developing connections and partnerships with everyone from local media, local artists to the Mayor of Charlotte … my reward is watching the growth in understanding and appreciation of Charlotte culture among my generation and the larger community.
