Melanie Leigh Morton
Company: Fit Atelier
Position: Chief Fitness Officer + Co-Founder
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Concord, North Carolina
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CHARLOTTE AREA?
My entire life (minus a few years in Asheville, a summer in Alaska and college at Appalachian State University.)
TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?
I’m a former Social Worker turned entrepreneur who loves fitness, music, community, adventure, and anything outdoors.
DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORIAL MOMENT?
One of my fondest memories of volunteering also includes a hidden talent that not many people know about- I’m a ventriloquist. When I was younger, my mom would take me around to nursing homes/communities and I would perform my routine for residents. The smiles on their faces are something that will never leave my mind, they were so pure and so contagious.
IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?
One of the greatest things about my role as Chief Fitness Officer for Fit Atelier is that I get to actively engage with new clients in the Charlotte community and share my journey with fitness and health. If you would have asked me 5 years ago to try a new fitness class by myself, run a half marathon, or take a 75-minute spin class, I would have seriously been like no way, absolutely not. My journey with health and fitness has not been easy and what I realized, is it is not easy for anyone. I get to share with people every day tips to stay healthy, new classes I’ve tried, and really engage with the community to stay active and try new things. As a past Social Worker in the medical industry, I witnessed so many of my patients say things like, “I wish I could still run like I used to, now it takes all I have in me to walk down the stairs in the morning.” I love that I get to be a part of a community that encourages everyone to get up and get active, try new things, be adventurous, and that I think is one of the greatest things I can contribute to the community. Preventative health and wellness is the best thing you can do for yourself.
PLEASE LET US KNOW ANY AWARDS OR RECOGNITIONS YOU’VE RECEIVED IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER:
During my summer spent in Alaska, I won Employee of the Year for Holland America!
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OR INTEREST?
Spin class is one of my absolute favorite hobbies. I love traveling, especially when it includes cities like NYC and Miami Beach where I can take a few SoulCycle classes! I’ve started a garden this year which I am super pumped about. Let’s hope my beets grow. I’ll try anything once, or twice if it’s fun. One of my favorite dates with my boyfriend is heading over to Inner Peaks South End for a climbing session.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE THAT YOU STAND BY?
“Ain’t Life Grand.” -Widespread Panic.
One of my favorite songs and favorite quotes. It is a reminder, every morning that I wake up, every time I am hiking and reach the peak and see all the living, breathing beauty that surrounds me, that life is grand, and for that, we should never take a single moment for granted.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? 10 YEARS?
In 5 years, I hope to see my business growing and thriving. I hope Fit Atelier’s Celebrity Trainer Series continues to grow and venture to new cities. In 10 years, I see myself happy, healthy, and managing Fit Atelier locations all over the South East and beyond.
CAN YOUR SHARE ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Hike Machu Picchu!
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU USED YOUR PASSPORT?
Last summer crossing the border from Alaska into Canada! Due for a new stamp, see you soon Bali!
WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NO ONE KNOWS?
I’m a ventriloquist!
WHO IS YOUR HERO?
My sister and business partner Brit. Every day I learn something new from her. Every day I see her interact with our Fit Atelier team and bring so many amazing new ideas to the table. One day she asked me if she should have another baby (she currently has one baby girl). At the time, I said it doesn’t matter to me either way but for some reason her question kept going through my head. I to myself, of course you should have another baby! I want Jude to have a sister, so she can have the same relationship we have. I am so thankful every day to have a sister and best friend.
WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
#GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso. A must read for any entrepreneur!
WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?
Lady Bird which I highly recommend!
WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT YOU SAW?
Langhorne Slim at City Winery in NYC. Side note- My sister/business partner Brit got on stage for a duet with him that night! *Proud sister moment*
