WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Johnson City, Tennessee
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CHARLOTTE AREA?
Two years and two months – I moved here in June 2017
TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?
I grew up in the small township of Abingdon, Virginia surrounded by my amazing family. Upon graduating high school, I decided to go to King College in Bristol, Tennessee as it was the local college. I joined the cycling team and then the track team; I was a javelin and disc thrower, but also ran hurdles. I graduated from King with my Accounting and Finance degree then returned for my Master of Business Admin. I was then accepted into East Tennessee State University for my Master of Accountancy and appointed to a graduate assistant position in the bursar’s office. During the school year I started a job as a contract accountant at Alpha Natural Resources (Coal and Natural Gas company) and received a full time offer upon graduation. While in college and couple years after, I was a sponsored cyclist racing all over the country. I took an accounting job at Dixon Hughes Goodman in Asheville, NC as I was wanting to move to a bigger city for a couple years, then I was transferred to Charlotte, NC. Through work I have been given multiple opportunities to get involved within the community and different outreach programs. I started volunteering with the Charlotte Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, United Way, and the Charlotte foodbank. When I am not working or volunteering, you will find me at my neighbors’ houses grilling out, hanging out with my friends either at the pool or the lake, or lost in thought pedaling around on a mountain bike.
DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?
This is a tough one to choose and I am unable to choose between the following two memories.
1. I was assisting with a family’s needs to keep their three dogs and upon completion, the mom ran up and hugged me. She was unable to even say thank you as she was weeping in my arms.
2. Being able to see one of my friend’s daughters go through new therapy trails for Pseudomonas in her lungs and return her lung function back to 100%
IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY? PLEASE BE AS DETAILED AS YOU CAN.
I have volunteered within the community with United Way; I have helped build wheelchair ramps for elderly, built fences around dog lots for families going through hard times, and volunteered sorting food at the food banks multiple times. Through DHG, I have been given the opportunity to participate in our “Count the Cans.” This is where we raise money, donate nonperishables, and volunteer our time to help make sure others who are less fortunate in Charlotte are given the necessities. Every year we have several high school students from Charlotte visit work for a couple weeks through YBLA, Young Black Leadership Alliance. Last year I was given the opportunity to mentor them on how our internal accounting department works and give guidance from a young professional viewpoint on colleges and careers. This year I was chosen again to lead our time with the group on the technology side and allow them to understand how they can interact with businesses all over the world through apps and different software. I joined the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation last year, fundraising for the Xtreme Hike and am returning this fall to hike again. I assist my peers with their fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Scarlett Hearts Inc. along with attending their events.
PLEASE LET US KNOW ANY AWARDS OR RECOGNITIONS YOU’VE RECEIVED IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER:
I am working towards getting my ITIL Foundations and then my ITIL Practitioner certifications.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OR INTEREST?
Anyone who has met me knows that I spend the majority of my free time on two wheels. I will either be on a mountain bike avoiding trees on Charlotte’s local trails or exploring the country side of Mt Holly/Denver on a road bike. I love going to the NC White Water Center to relax at River Jam concerts with friends any chance I get. I have always enjoyed cooking and grilling for my friends, so we can catch up on how our lives are going. I really enjoy hiking and trail running with my three-year-old Australian Shepard just to get to the top and experience breathtaking views. Going out on the lake, either to fish or just relax, is one of my favorite pastimes that I do not get to take part in as often as I would like.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE THAT YOU STAND BY?
“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure if you can do it, say YES – then learn how to do it later.” Richard Branson
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? 10 YEARS?
In 5 years, I see myself still being in Charlotte and working with DHG. I will hopefully be manager of the Digital Administration team and even more involved with our company sponsored out reach programs. I would like to be a mentor to local high schoolers or a life coach for college students trying to figure out college, trades, and career choices. In 10 years, I hope to be in leadership training for CIO at DHG as I feel I am being groomed for the role. I would like to have working knowledge of every system our IT dept uses. I want to be a chair or a co-chair of Cystic Fibrosis fundraisers if we have not already found a cure. I want to either have my own nonprofit or be on the board of a friend’s organization pushing Charlotte to improve everyone’s standard of living. I would like to position myself as a go to career coach to help young professionals figure out their new stages in life as I have several amazing mentors doing the same for me now.
CAN YOUR SHARE ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
I want to complete a full Ironman.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU USED YOUR PASSPORT?
I last used my passport when I traveled to Germany and Paris for international business trip with my MBA group learning about Mercedes automation.
WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NO ONE KNOWS?
I would like to start a non-profit to help less fortunate individuals by remodeling, updating to code, or expanding their current living situations. I used to do roofing and remodeling, so I would like to use those skills to help our community.
WHO IS YOUR HERO?
My hero would be my parents. I have seen them complete challenges that I thought were impossible. They have always set goals and excelled past them to put me in situations for betterment of my life. They taught me that our choices are what determines our circumstances and that we are in complete control of our lives. I learned through their actions that money isn’t everything, but rather our interactions with and helping those surrounding us in our lives. I know now that nothing is outside of my grasps if I am willing to sacrifice for it like they sacrificed for me.
