MELANIE FOX

Company: Ingersoll Rand; Work For Your Beer
Position: Digital Engagement Leader; Co-Founder (respectively).
Age: 27

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Wexford, Pennsylvania.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CHARLOTTE AREA?

4 years.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?

I graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 2012 with a BS in Marketing and a BA in Advertising. I have been working for Ingersoll Rand since I first accepted an internship in 2010, and I help drive the digital strategy for the business, which is both challenging and exciting! I also worked with fellow Top 30 Under 30 winner, Alicia Thomas, to launch Work For Your Beer, LLC this past December. Needless to say, working an 8 – 5 and running a business keeps me quite busy!

When I’m not working, I enjoy rock climbing, practicing yoga at breweries, and hanging out with my Corgi, Sir Pancake Bacon Fox. I also love craft beer, exploring new cities, and meeting new people.

DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?

This year, I had the opportunity to photograph my first ACEing Autism event. I cannot tell you how much it warmed my heart to see how this incredible organization focuses their time and efforts on encouraging these amazing children to learn how to play tennis. You can really tell how passionate the people who run the program are, and I couldn’t stop smiling the entire time I was photographing. I am planning on photographing several more events as the year goes by, and I cannot wait.

IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?

With Ingersoll Rand, I am able to give back by supporting the multiple fund-raising efforts offered on campus. Each year, I participate in the United Way auction and offer my photography services to be bid on. I also was able to pilot and help launch a bike share on campus. Not only is this helpful for the employees, but it prevents additional harmful emissions by allowing our employees to bike instead of drive from building to building!

With Work For Your Beer, we are growing a community that encourages an active, balanced lifestyle that also engages local businesses. Not only that, but we are passionate about giving back to Charlotte. We dedicated the entire month of May to raising funds for the 24 Foundation (formerly 24 Hours of Booty). We are partnering with Beers and Burpees for a Brewery Tour in June & July to raise awareness and donations for Dream on 3. We have supported several other fund-raising efforts already this year, and we will continue to partner with local organizations to help support the community as much as we can.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OR INTEREST?

I enjoy all types of fitness (rock climbing, yoga, boot camps, hiking, running, dog walks, etc.). I listen to a lot of podcasts on my drives to work, which allows me to learn something new every day. I love food, and I’m constantly on the search for new, locally sourced meals. I wouldn’t say I’ve made it to “gardener” status quite yet, but I am working to grow more of my own food, which is exciting!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE THAT YOU STAND BY?

“In life, people tend to wait for good things to come to them. And by waiting, they miss out. Usually, what you wish for doesn't fall in your lap; it falls somewhere nearby, and you have to recognize it, stand up, and put in the time and work it takes to get to it. This isn't because the universe is cruel. It's because the universe is smart. It has its own cat-string theory and knows we don't appreciate things that fall into our laps.”
-Neil Strauss.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS?

If you asked me this five years ago, my answer would not have been “Working on the digital strategy for Ingersoll Rand and running a beer fitness business,” but here we are today. I tend to operate “in the now” versus predicting my future, but I do have a couple of visions in mind.

If all goes well, Work For Your Beer will continue to grow and expand outside of the Queen City, ultimately moving towards being a nationally recognized brand in the brewery community. I am planning to gain more experience and insight as an entrepreneur, and I would love nothing more than to encourage and support other start-ups.

I expect to continue impacting Ingersoll Rand’s digital footprint in the manufacturing world. There is so much potential to continue growing the already powerhouse of a company, and I would be very fortunate to develop and manage a team of digital all-stars.

I absolutely still see myself living in Charlotte, traveling often, and working hard no matter what project(s) I am working on.

CAN YOU SHARE ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I am determined to see the Northern Lights! Hopefully will make that happen within the next year!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU USED YOUR PASSPORT?

This past February, I went on a yoga/adventure retreat in Costa Rica. I was able to practice yoga twice a day, go white water rafting, and waterfall rappelling, as well as visit an organic farm, help walk dogs at a dog rescue, and teach children yoga at an orphanage. It was an exceptionally rewarding trip, and I hope to visit again soon.

WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NO ONE KNOWS?

Despite the rumors of it being impossible, I can, in fact, lick my elbow.

WHO IS YOUR HERO?

My husband, Alan. Not only is he incredibly hard working, intelligent, and fun, but he deals with me and my craziness on a daily basis (which I am sure is not an easy task!).

WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

Yes Please, by Amy Poehler.

WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?

Beauty and the Beast.

WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT YOU SAW?

Zac Brown Band with Andy Grammer (normally not a country fan, but ZBB is full of very talented musicians!).
