JASMINE SIMS

Company: Vanguard
Position: Divisional Planning
Age: 27

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Montgomery, Alabama.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CHARLOTTE AREA?

5 years.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOU?

I am passionate about financial literacy, youth advocacy, and diversity. I try, as much as possible, to ensure that my passions are integrated with the work I do both at Vanguard and in the Charlotte Community.

I have been at Vanguard for 5 years. In my current role, I lead strategic and business planning for the organization’s largest division. I started at the company through a leadership development program. Since that time, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work directly with high net worth clients and lead teams of investment professionals.

Outside of work, I enjoy volunteering and civic engagement. I give back most in the community as a member of the United Way LINC Council, which works to engage 30 and under early career professionals in the Charlotte community.

In my downtime, I love an occasional (well, more than occasional) nap, Netflix binge, and cycling class.

DURING YOUR TIME VOLUNTEERING FOR A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY OR PROJECT, WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?

My most memorable moment volunteering actually happened nearly 10 years ago. For two years in a row, I was a camp counselor for a program called Camp Sunshine in Montgomery, Alabama. This week long camp was designed for at-risk young girls, and provided them with an opportunity to grow in their self-confidence and gain experiences they had not had before. It’s the most memorable because it was what inspired me to continue a life of civic engagement.

IN YOUR OPINION, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?

I believe I contribute to the community through the LINC Council by providing opportunities for young professionals to understand the challenges we face in the Charlotte community. I would love to do more in ensuring that people from even the most privileged and blessed walks of life understand what others are experiencing and how access to information and education is a huge part of economic mobility and prosperity.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OR INTEREST?

Outside of volunteering and working, I enjoy cycling, Netflix, and sleeping. I have recently become intrigued with the idea of living a simpler life, so I have been researching concepts such as minimalism and mindfulness. I’m not sure it’ll quite stick with me, but we’ll see.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE THAT YOU STAND BY?

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them”.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS?

In 5 years, I hope to have more responsibility in my career and civic engagement activities.

CAN YOUR SHARE ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I have not made a bucket list, but I am currently in the process of creating a “30 before 30” list. One of the things on that list is to spend a week-long vacation in solitude (still working on the place).

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU USED YOUR PASSPORT?

I got my passport last year and have yet to use it. Another thing to add to my 30 before 30!

WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NO ONE KNOWS?

I have a terrible sense of direction.

WHO IS YOUR HERO?

My mom - I admire her strength and perseverance.

WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

For leisure, the last book I read was “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriaty.

WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?

The Accountant starring Ben Affleck.

WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT YOU SAW?

I went to the Bad Boys Reunion Tour when they came to Charlotte. They brought DMX as a special guest. So much fun!
